Award Winning Super Bowl Chili
Guys this Super bowl chili is amaaaazing. Okay, I know the title is a bit much, but it actually is award winning Super Bowl chili and I just thought you should know. Because Super Bowl is serious business and a good chili recipe is an absolute staple. Now before I go any further I should probably say that my 6 year old son knows more about the actual game of football than I do, but I take the food and fun part very seriously. That and he knows a heck of a lot about football.
I LOVE America. I know I say this a ton but it’s true. Settle down, I love Canada too, but there are just some areas we are lacking in that America does way better. Cracker Barrel, fried chicken, HOBBY LOBBY. And of course, football.
Sure we have the CFL but I’m just going to go ahead and say what everyone else is thinking…. It’s not that great. Sorry, not really though…
Listen, American football shuts down entire cities. Families gather every Sunday for years, sharing meals together and having a blast, and don’t even get me started on Friday Night Lights. Can I just pause to say that whoever canceled that show was just WRONG. On so many levels. If you don’t know what I am talking about then you need to clear your schedule, grab your favorite snacks, and lock yourself up until you have binge watched all 5 seasons.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose!
You’re welcome.
Alright, back to the Super Bowl Chili.
Chili and football go hand in hand.
I’m just going to go ahead and say this upfront, this chili is A LOT of work. It’s not your regular weeknight chili, and I only really make it for the Super Bowl, guests, or the annual town chili cook off. Which by the way, did I mention I won? Sorry, I had too.
If you’re looking for an easy chili recipe this isn’t it (although I will be posting that soon). If you’re looking for a deliciously sweet and spicy, wow all your guests, show stopping chili than look no further. I’ve always said that you get out what you put in and this chili is proof of that.
Part of what makes this chili so great is the fact that I cook it for days. I turn it off, and sometimes even put it in the fridge for a night and then simmer it for another day.
You know how certain leftovers just seem to taste better the next day? This is one of them. I’m not saying you have to do that. But if you want award winning chili then you should. Go ahead and make it Friday night after work and I promise by Sunday kick off, the flavors will have meshed together so nicely it will be the star of the show. Another thing I love is that you can make it in the slow cooker! I’m all about the slow cookers here but if you don’t have one the stove will be just fine. Also, go get a slow cooker.
There’s also a whole lot of onion in this recipe but that’s okay. It works out and you won’t notice it. Trust me. And if you’re worried about all the spice, don’t, it’s a big enough batch that it cuts the spice. You can also start with a little less hot sauce and work your way up.
Top this Super Bowl Chili with all the goods!
Toppings are just as important as the cooking process. I top this chili with sour cream, shredded cheese and cilantro but you can also add anything you like! Don’t forget to serve it with a side of your favorite cornbread.
Super Bowl Chili Recipe Toppings:
- shredded cheese
- diced green onions
- sour cream
- cilantro
- bacon
- tortilla chips
- avocado
- jalapeno’s
PREP PREP PREP!
I can’t stress this enough. This Super Bowl chili will go a heck of a lot smoother if you prep. Get all your ingredients ready. Dice all your veggies and toss them in a bowl. Drain and rinse your beans. You get the idea. Trust me, it will be way more enjoyable to make if you prep. Just pop open your wine and away you go. One cup for the chili and one for you.
GAME DAY APPETIZERS
This award winning chili (I just had to say it again), or rather any chili, also works great in my bite size chili scoops. They are so cute and so yummy! Also pretty self explanatory. Tostitos scoops, chili, sour cream, cheese, and cilantro! Bam Instant little bite sized hits!

Okay we all know how much I hate long recipe posts, so here you go.
Award Winning Superbowl Chili
Ingredients
- 2 lbs. ground beef
- 1 lb. hot Italian sausage casings removed
- 1 white onion diced
- 1 red onion diced
- 1 sweet onion diced
- 2 carrots peeled and diced
- 3 celery stalks diced
- 1 green pepper diced
- 1 jalapeno pepper, seeds removed diced
- 1 head of garlic (yes the whole head) peeled and chopped
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp. pepper
- 1 small can of tomato paste
- 1 cup red wine
- 1 796 ml can of diced tomatoes
- 1 can of Campbell's tomato soup
- ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tbsp. hot sauce
- 2 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tbsp ground cumin
- 1 tbsp. dried ancho chile powder
- ½ cup honey
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley chopped
- 1 540 ml can of dark red kidney beans drained and rinsed
- 1 540 ml can of pinto beans drained and rinsed
- 1 398 ml can of pork and beans (I use the ones in maple syrup or molasses)
- 1 package of old el paso chili seasoning
Toppings
- sour cream
- shredded cheese
- chopped cilantro
Instructions
- In a large skillet cook the ground beef and sausage over medium heat until browned. Remove 1/4 cup drippings then strain and place into a crock pot or large stock pot.
- In the same pan saute your onions, celery, carrots, peppers, and garlic with the 1/4 drippings and salt and pepper until the onions are soft and translucent. Stir in tomato paste and allow the mixture to caramelize. Add in your red wine, scraping the bottom of the pan with a spatula to get all the delicious flavor bits on the bottom. Add in the diced tomatoes, tomato soup, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and chili powder (not the old el paso just yet) cumin, parsley and ancho chile powder. Bring to a slow boil and then add in your honey. Simmer for a few minutes then add to the crock pot or pot.
- Add all your beans to the crock pot and stir in your Old El Paso seasoning. Let cook for in crock pot for 4-6 hours. Turn it off and let cool overnight. Reheat in crockpot on low for 4-6 hours. Serve topped with sour cream, shredded cheese, and chopped cilantro. (You can serve after the first 4-6 hours I just like to let mine sit!)

Yum!!! I do not even care at all that there’s more work to this than a typical chili. I love chili so I’m willing to go the extra mile for it to taste perfect. Thank you for sharing your award winning chili with us!!
“also, go get a slow cooker” lol I’m cracking up. This sounds bomb I look forward to trying it!
Where is the nutritional info?!
OMG I made this for a party and it was a huge it. I followed the receipt except I couldn’t find the El Paso Chili seasoning. Otherwise, it was so good I am making it again today per my husbands request. Thank you for much for a yummy recipe.

Writing on any subject is not an easy task, when you write on any subject it is very difficult. Anyone who thinks that he will write something easily on any subject, then his thinking is very wrong, I do not know that perhaps those people will have to put so much mind. Whatever you have written in your post, it has been written very beautifully, you are a person writing a good post, the more you are praised, the less it is.
I have tried several chili recipes and this one is without a doubt the best chili I have ever had. That honey totally makes it! I literally never leave comments on anything, but it is so good that I just had too! I didn’t think it was that much work either, do yourself a favor and try this chili!
Thank you so much! The honey is one of my favourite ingredients!! I’m so glad you enjoyed it 🙂
When you turn slow cooker on first time is it on low as the second day to reheat it
yes low and slow makes the best chili 🙂
