Southern Baked Beans

Okay Ya’ll, can we just take a minute and talk about this Southern Baked Beans Recipe. It is honestly SO good. So easy, and SO cheap to make.  You’ll be incorporating it into your weekly meal rotation immediatley.  Did I mention it has bacon?  #yourewelcome. Every good cook should have at least one baked beans recipe in their cookbook cupboard, and this one is it.

Baked beans have gotten a bad rep and in my opinion they are serisously underrated. Like think about it. They are cheap cheap cheap and with food prices these days, thats a must. Versatile? Yes ma’am, plus, everyone loves them! They are checking off all the boxes here am I right? Anyway, I think we need to start treating them with the respect and dignity they deserve.  Move over mashed potatoes, beans are here.

I LOVE southern food. Actually, I love all food, but Southern food just hits different. Every dish is so comforting, so satisfying, and it’s ALWAYS made with love.  Dinner around here is sacred. After a long hard day I want a MEAL, and it better be good. These southern baked beans make the cut.

Add these Southern Baked Beans to everything!

Okay, maybe not everything, but almost everything! Here are a few of my favorite pairings.

We make these Southern Baked Beans with my Root Beer Pulled Pork and Classic Creamy Coleslaw trust me, you won’t be sad. They also pair well with BBQ chicken thigh sandwhiches,  Mac and Cheese, cornbread, sausage and mashed potatoes, eggs, and more!

Southern baked beans and pulled pork

Baked Beans and Pulled Pork are like peanut butter and jam. You can’t have one without the other.

Ingriedients:

  • Beans – Don’t be fooled by the store canned beans. These beans are way easier and taste better too. However, if you feel super passionatley about it, feel free to use canned navy beans or soaked dried beans.
  • Bacon – Everything is better with bacon. Unless you’re a vegetarian, than skip this part.
  • Garlic – Use 4 cloves garlic, minced. I’m a bit of a garlic snob and prefer fresh garlic from the farmers market but grocery store garlic is good too.
  • Onion – I use a medium sweet onion. If you don’t have one on hand or are trying to keep the cost down then use a yellow onion.
  • Worcestershire sauce – Use Coconut Aminos if sensitive to soy.
  • Unsulphured molasses – Adds a sweet, smokey flavor to the cooked beans.
  • Brown sugar – Dark, light, golden, use whatever you have on hand. These beans turn out perfect no matter which sugar you choose.
  • Liquid Smoke – This is my favorite part of the recipe. It adds the perfect smoky flavor that will transport you right the backyard cookout. I use a hickory flavored liquid smoke
  • Ketchup – Use 1/2 cup of Heinz ketchup in this recipe.
  • Yellow mustard – I use 2 tsp. of yellow mustard in this recipe.
